I Miss the Sound of Your Voice

A few weeks ago, I heard that Matt Nathanson was coming to Baltimore and I immediately bought tickets to the concert. I fell in love with his music (and him) when I was in seventh grade—eight years ago! That year, I went to my first Matt Nathanson concert and haven’t missed a single one of his local concerts since then. (Well, that excludes this past summer when he was opening for Sugarland—I cannot tolerate country music the least bit, so I had to pass on that opportunity.)

I usually go with my friends Jamie and Molly, but I decided to invite my sisters this time. We had been talking about going to a concert together for a while, and Matt Nathanson never disappoints.

We ate a quick dinner together at home, then headed downtown. The concert was being held at Rams Head Live!, a popular venue for concerts in the Baltimore area. Thankfully, we didn’t have any problems with our tickets, which is lucky, considering I usually tend to cause some sort of commotion.

The last time that I was in charge of bringing tickets to a concert, I completely forgot them, so we had to drive all the way back home (which defeated the purpose of leaving early to get a good spot). On the plus side, while we were sulking and walking back to our car, we happened to see Tyler Hilton unloading his tour bus and had a chance to chat with him. And for those of you who don’t know who Tyler Hilton is, don’t bother Googling him—he’s that irrelevant nowadays.

We arrived at Rams Head just as the opening act was beginning. We didn’t know the artist, and quite honestly, I could have done without her belting into the microphone with her deep and raspy voice. Her tambourine-playing was a bit much, too. Surprisingly, Matt came onto the stage shortly after 8pm, so we didn’t have to wait for long.

As expected, he gave an amazing performance and had the crowd laughing the entire time. Because he has recently gained a lot of popularity from his newer songs that are played on the radio, I wasn’t surprised that the majority of the people there were interested in his new music. I personally prefer his older records, so I was glad that he included songs that were released many years ago.

We arrived home just before 11pm; our parents were shocked to see that we were home so “early.” Apparently, they expected us to be out much later. Ironically, whenever I would go to a concert during the week when I was in middle school, I would routinely receive phone calls starting at 10pm from my parents. I was always on a mission to meet Matt after the concert (which I did manage once!), so I would hold my cell phone up to a speaker and would simply pretend that I couldn’t hear them. Making curfew was not a top priority whenever a hot guy with a guitar was involved.

It was a great outing for a Sunday night and the perfect way to end the weekend.

Are you a Matt Nathanson fan?

What was the last concert that you went to?

  1. Fun! I love him! He played on the Bachelor this season a few episodes back.

  2. What fun! I don’t get to go to concerts often but I would love to see someone just rock it on stage! I can’t even remember the last real concert I’ve been too—- I think I was in highschool! Yikes!

  3. I do not recognize his name off-hand, but I am sure I would recognize his music. It sounds like you had a great time! I love that all of your sisters went–what a fun idea!

I HATE openers. I seem to always forget that they exist and then get really grumpy when their acts last forever. It sounds like you did not have to deal with raspy girl for very long–phew!

The last concert I went to was for Bela Fleck (a super niche band that Chase loves). Before that, I went to a Guster concert (at UMD College Park!). It was amazing.

I’ve only ever heard the songs they play on the radio by him, but I like the sound of his voice! I’m sure the concert was amazing :)

My last concert was Jack Johnson a while back. I’ve been to a ton of his concerts since before he was even really big and I have to admit that I think I like the old Jack style better. It can get really annoying to have tons of people around that are only a fan for that moment because of stuff they are playing on the radio.

Ah I am SO jealous. I love his music, he’s so talented. I haven’t been to a concert in quite a while, I think the last one was Keith Urban three summers ago.

I AM SO JEALOUS. He’s FROM San Francisco and he’s not even touring here this spring (and I refuse to go to a Kelly Clarkson concert just to see him open with like 5 songs.) I love him, a lot of his older stuff, but I really like Modern Love too. Randomly enough I’ve been listening to it nonstop lately. And full disclosure, I love Sugarland too :) The last concert I went to was Temper Trap, and we have Foster the People tickets for this summer!
